A Life Among Whales
S.O.S and Students for Environmental Awareness team up to present a free film screening of "A Life Among Whales." Weaving together natural history and biography, this award-winning film is a fascinating exploration into the unique relationship between humans & whales as told by renowned whale biologist and activist Dr. Roger Payne. A passionate and charismatic individual, Payne has advanced the boundaries of science and activism over the last four decades — beginning with his pioneering work on whale songs in the 1970s, to his study of ocean pollution today. With beautiful and haunting imagery, the film follows one scientist's dedication to saving the whales, and forces us to question our stewardship of the Earth & our co-existence with some of its most intriguing creatures.

Feral Cat Presentation and Panel Discussion
Feral cats — the unsocialized descendants of unsterilized pet and stray cats — can be found in many locations where there is a food source and irresponsible pet owners, inlcuding the UGA campus and the Athens community. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is an internationally recognized method used to control the feral population through sterilization, vaccination, and active management of cats in colonies. However, some people disagree with TNR, believing it does harm to wildlife populations and the cats themselves. Dr. Julie Levy, a leading researcher on feral cat management and director of the Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, will give a presentation about TNR. A discussion focusing on feral cats in our community will follow, featuring a panel of local experts and activists. Come learn about TNR in the Athens community and share your views on this controversial topic.

Thanking the Monkey
SOS is proud to welcome guest speaker Karen Dawn, world-renowned animal advocate and author of Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the Way We Treat Animals. As a spokesperson for the animal rights movement, Karen has appeared on MTV, ABC, and NBC and hosted talk shows on major radio stations. Her opinion pieces have been published in leading newspapers including the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post. In her first book, Thanking the Monkey, Karen Dawn covers pets, fur, fashion, food, animal testing, activism, and more. But as the title playfully suggests, this isn't like any previous animal rights book. Thanking the Monkey is a fun primer, presented in full color, offering not only facts and figures about the treatment of animals, but also whimsical cartoons, celebrity cameos, and feel-good stories. Publishers Weekly says Thanking the Monkey is "a cogent and thoroughly researched overview of all the major issues in animal rights" and Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers says "This book is education with a smile and should be required reading for all college students!" You can learn more about Karen Dawn and the book and watch the fun video promo at www.ThankingtheMonkey.com. Don't miss this special event with a dynamic speaker and author!
