Campus Cats
Come hear our exciting guest speaker Kelly Bettinger of UGA's Campus Cats organization. Kelly will speak about the Campus Cats program which aims to humanely reduce the number of homeless cats on the UGA campus through TNR (trapping, neuter/spay, and return), kitten adoption, and care and feeding of adult cats. Learn how you can help!

Planet Earth - The Future
S.O.S and Students for Environmental Awareness team up to present a free film screening! "Planet Earth - The Future" looks at the possible fate of endangered animals, habitats, and ultimately ourselves. Featuring stunning high-definition cinematography and a global array of experts, the film explores why so many species are threatened and how they can be protected in the future. This acclaimed feature is an amazing visual experience that offers an unparalleled portrait of life on Earth. 2006, 1 hour. Film discussion to follow.

Steve Shi, adjunct professor of law at UGA, will speak on the topic of rescue and rehabilitation of severely abused and neglected dogs based on his experience working with dogs from an abandoned shelter in Georgia.

World Farm Animals Day
This annual observance is dedicated to raising awareness of the needless suffering and deaths each year of 50 billion animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses. S.O.S will have a table at Tate Plaza with free literature, stickers, DVDS, and more to show how people can easily reduce the suffering of factory-farmed animals by choosing a cruelty-free compassionate lifestyle.

KFC Demonstration
Join us for a peaceful demo to persuade KFC to adopt animal welfare standards that would eliminate the worst abuses for the 850 million chickens brutally killed each year for KFC's restaurants. Signs, flyers, chicken costumes provided... all we need is you! Contact Nico Dauphine for more information or to volunteer.

UGA student DeeAnne Meliopoulos, a wildlife major, will talk about her experience working on bird conservation in Ecuador and how conservation measures that benefit birds are also beneficial to other species and the ecosystem as a whole.

S.O.S will have a table at the Dubconscious show taking place at the Georgia Theatre to share information with the Athens community about our mission to create a humane and compassionate world for animals. Thanks to the wonderful folks in Dubconscious for inviting S.O.S!

Saving the Georgia Coast's Right Whales
Hans Neuhauser, Executive Director of the Georgia Environmental Policy Institute, will speak about efforts to bring the North Atlantic Right Whale back from the brink of extinction. Right whales are among the world's most endangered species, with fewer than 400 animals still remaining. The southeast coast has a particularly important role to play in the recovery of the right whale, for the waters off Georgia and northern Florida serve as the only known location in the world where the species gives birth to its young.

Dancing Bears of India
Kartick Satyanarayan and Geeta Seshamani of Wildlife SOS, an Indian non-profit organization, visit UGA to speak about efforts to save India's rapidly-vanishing wildlife including the "dancing bears" which are sloth bear cubs stolen from their mothers and trained, using brutally painful methods, to stand on their hind legs and perform. This illegal practice threatens bear populations in the wild and causes constant suffering for the captive bears. Wildlife SOS protects bears by fighting poaching, operating bear rehabilitation centers, and protecting habitat.
