Project Nim
We kick off our 8th annual Animal Voices Film Festival with "Project Nim " which tells the story of Nim, a chimpanzee who was raised and nurtured like a human child to discover if he could learn to communicate with sign language. See our Film Festival page for complete details!

S.O.S Meeting
Join us for a special visit by Dr. Betty Jean Craige and Cosmo, her talkative African Grey Parrot! Dr. Craige will speak to us about "Bird Brains: How Cosmo, a Parrot, Has Awakened Us to the Intelligence of Animals." Cosmo shows us that even 150 years after Darwin's "Origin of Species" we humans still overlook and underestimate the intelligence and emotions of the other animals sharing our planet. Dr. Betty Jean Craige is Professor Emerita of Comparative Literature and Director Emerita of the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts at UGA. She also writes a Sunday column, "Cosmo Talks," in the Athens Banner-Herald.

In honor of Spay Day USA — an annual campaign to inspire people to save animal lives by spaying or neutering pets — S.O.S will hold an information table to promote spay/neuter and share information about inexpensive local options for this life-saving procedure.

Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Day
S.O.S will have a table to share information about cruelty-free cosmetics highlighting vegan products that are not tested on animals and that contain no animal ingredients. Stop by for information, product samples, and free makeovers!

The Great American Meatout
S.O.S will be taking over Tate Plaza for the Great American Meatout — a national celebration of vegetarian living and its benefits for health, animals, and the environment! SOS is hosting a food sampling event to encourage people to "try veg" and add more veg meals to their diets. Enjoy free samples of tasty vegan foods and learn how to stop animal cruelty by choosing compassionate and healthy meat-free alternatives.

Minds in the Water
Come see this award winning documentary following the quest of professional surfer Dave Rastovich and his friends to protect dolphins, whales, and their ocean environment. Through Dave's journey — a five-year adventure spanning the globe from Australia to the Galapagos, Tonga, California, Alaska and Japan — we see one surfer's quest to activate his community to help protect the ocean and its inhabitants.
